A picture story of “The First Navy Nurse on a Pacific Battlefield” The story of the first woman, Jane Kendiegh Cheverton to set foot on a battlefield, Iwo Jima Okinawa during World War II. The photos are a compilation of this famed trip taken by Gill DeWitt, assigned to photograph this “first”. Stoty begins with DeWitt preparing to leave on the plane assigned to Ann Purvis, but the plane departed before her arrival. So he left on the 2nd plane with Jane. However, the first plane became lost, thus allowing Jane the distinction of being first. DeWitt kept a diary of the trip. The photos and story were “found” after DeWitts’ death by his widow. She donated them to the ADM Nimitz Museum in Fredricksburg, Texas. They compiled the photos and story into a booklet.
