(d) A dark blue leather case with gold embellishments and “Navy Cross” printed on the front. Inside is a cushioned gold color interior. Hinged lid. USHS HIGBEE This medal was awarded to Lenah S. Higbee for her WWI service, November 20, 1920 “For distinguished service in the line of her profession and unsual and conspicuous devotion to duty as Superintendent of the Navy Nurse Corps. Three other Navy nurses received the Navy Cross in WWI, but posthumously. These nurses died in Naval hospital during the flu epidemic 1918. They are Lillian Murphy, Edna Place, Marie Hidell.
